On Your Toes-Measuring Earned Value in an Agile World

How do you successfully measure earned value in an agile world? It’s all about taking advantage of the agile data you already track to streamline your schedule, reduce redundant data in your earned value management (EVM) engine and, most importantly, save time and money.

In this white paper, first published in 2016, Laura Bier worked with Dave Scott (formerly of BDO, now C&S Consulting) and Kathy Boatwright of Deltek, to capture lessons learned from the early days of combining Agile and EVM. We are often approached at conferences by folks sharing that they still refer to this paper now. The practices captured here have been incorporated into many of the other Agile and EVM guides published since; including the NDIA’s Industry Practice Guide for Agile on Earned Value Management Programs from 2019 and the GAO’s Agile Assessment Guide from 2020.
